The Yard Is Calling. And Every Bison Knows You Answer.
There is a moment that every person who has ever attended Howard Homecoming describes the same way. You are standing on the Yard — Howard University's historic central lawn — surrounded by thousands of alumni who have come back from every corner of the country, every profession, every generation. The music is playing. The step show is about to start. And you look around at this sea of Black excellence — doctors and lawyers, artists and activists, CEOs and community organizers — and you feel something that is almost impossible to put into words.
You feel what it means to belong to something greater than yourself.
That is Howard Homecoming. The most iconic HBCU homecoming in America. And for five extraordinary days every October — October 20–25, 2026 — Washington D.C. belongs to the Bison.

What Makes Howard Homecoming Unlike Any Other
Every HBCU has a homecoming. But Howard's is in a category of its own — and three things set it apart.
First, Howard University itself. Founded in 1867, Howard has produced more Black PhDs, more Black lawyers, more Black doctors, and more Black leaders than virtually any other institution in America. Its alumni network includes Thurgood Marshall, Kamala Harris, Toni Morrison, Chadwick Boseman, Taraji P. Henson, Phylicia Rashad, and thousands of others who have shaped American and global culture. When Howard alumni come home, they come from the absolute top of every profession in America.
Second, Washington D.C. The nation's capital — a majority-Black city with one of the most powerful concentrations of Black political, professional, and cultural life in America — becomes the backdrop for Howard Homecoming. The city amplifies everything.
Third, the culture. Howard Homecoming is not just a sporting event with a parade. It is a five-day cultural festival — the Yardfest concerts, the step shows, the Greek show, the comedy show, the fashion, the parties, the Yard. Nothing is quite like it.
The History: Howard University & Its Legendary Homecoming
Howard University was founded in 1867, just two years after the end of the Civil War, by General Oliver Otis Howard of the Freedmen's Bureau. Its mission was simple and radical: provide higher education to the formerly enslaved and their descendants at a time when virtually every other institution of higher learning in America was closed to Black people.
Over the next 150 years, Howard became the intellectual and cultural capital of Black America — the place where the best Black minds in the country were educated and sent out to change the world. The Harlem Renaissance was shaped by Howard faculty and alumni. The civil rights legal strategy was developed at Howard Law. The first Black Supreme Court Justice studied there. The first female Vice President of the United States is a proud Howard alumna.
Howard Homecoming grew alongside the university's rising prestige into the premier HBCU homecoming event in America — the one that every other HBCU compares itself to, the one that draws alumni, celebrities, and visitors from across the country every October.
Why Howard Homecoming Matters
Howard Homecoming matters because Howard University matters — and that is not hyperbole. The institution has been at the center of Black intellectual, political, and cultural life in America for over 150 years. Coming back to the Yard is an act of reconnection with that legacy — with the generations of Black men and women who fought for the right to be educated, who used that education to fight for justice, and who built the institutions and movements that shaped modern America.
For non-alumni visitors, Howard Homecoming is a window into the best of Black excellence — a reminder of what becomes possible when Black people are given the space, resources, and community to fully develop their gifts.
Why You Should Attend Howard Homecoming 2026
You do not have to be a Howard alumnus to attend Howard Homecoming — and you absolutely should go if you haven't. The Yardfest concerts, the Greek show, the comedy show, and the general electricity of 40,000 people descending on a campus in Washington D.C. are experiences open to anyone.
The fashion alone is worth the trip. Howard Homecoming is one of the most stylish events in Black America — the tailgate fits, the Yard looks, the evening event attire are all extraordinary. Come dressed. Come correct.
You will leave inspired. Guaranteed.
