The Dragons Are Coming Home to Lynchburg.

Nestled on the hills above the James River, Virginia University of Lynchburg carries a history that stretches back further than most HBCU homecomings you've ever attended. Founded in 1886 by the Virginia Baptist State Convention as Lynchburg Baptist Seminary — and known for decades as Virginia Seminary before taking its current name in 1996 — VUL has spent nearly a century and a half producing Black educators, ministers, and leaders under a motto that still defines it: Sibi Auxilium et Libertas, "Self Help and Freedom."

Once a year, that history comes roaring back to life. VUL Homecoming brings the Dragons family — alumni, current students, faculty, and the surrounding Lynchburg community — back to the 6.82-acre campus on Garfield Avenue for a weekend of navy-and-light-blue pride, coronation, tailgating, and reconnection.

What Makes VUL Homecoming Special

VUL is a small school with an outsized history. It is one of the oldest historically Black institutions in Virginia, and unlike the mega-homecomings at Howard or Hampton, a Dragons homecoming still feels like a family reunion — the kind where the university president knows alumni by name and the coronation court is cheered on by people who watched the newly crowned queen grow up in Lynchburg. That intimacy, paired with the genuine weight of the school's nearly 140-year history, is what sets it apart.

The History: From Lynchburg Baptist Seminary to Virginia University of Lynchburg

VUL's story begins in 1886, when it was founded and then incorporated in 1888 by the Virginia Baptist State Convention as Lynchburg Baptist Seminary, with classes beginning in 1890 under the name Virginia Seminary. The school changed names several times as it grew — becoming Virginia Theological Seminary and College in 1900, then Virginia Seminary and College in 1962 — before finally adopting the name Virginia University of Lynchburg in 1996. Throughout every name change, the mission stayed consistent: provide a Baptist-rooted, rigorous education to Black students at a time and place where opportunities were deliberately scarce.

Today the Dragons compete in football, basketball, and track and field, with athletics playing a central role in campus life and homecoming weekend serving as the biggest gathering of the school year.

Why Homecoming Matters

For a school VUL's size, homecoming is more than a game — it's a lifeline of institutional memory. Alumni giving during homecoming weekend directly supports scholarships and campus improvements at a small, historically underfunded HBCU, and every returning graduate who walks the Garfield Avenue campus again helps keep VUL's nearly century-and-a-half legacy visible in a city that doesn't always spotlight it.

Who Should Attend

  • VUL alumni of every era, especially milestone reunion classes.
  • Prospective students and families curious about one of Virginia's most historic HBCUs.
  • Lynchburg locals who want an authentic, community-rooted HBCU homecoming experience without a multi-hour drive.
  • HBCU culture travelers looking for a smaller, more personal homecoming outside the usual big-name circuit.

What to Expect: Homecoming Weekend

  • Coronation: The crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, a campus tradition steeped in pageantry, family pride, and community turnout.
  • Tailgating: Alumni chapters and student organizations set up on campus ahead of kickoff with food, music, and navy-and-light-blue everything.
  • The Football Game: The Dragons take the field at home in front of the largest crowd of the season.
  • Alumni Reconnection: Class meetups, campus tours, and informal gatherings around Lynchburg fill out the rest of the weekend.

Note: VUL Athletics has not published an official homecoming date for 2026 as of this writing. Based on the released 2026 home schedule (home games August 29 vs. Hampton, September 5 vs. Roanoke, October 3 vs. South Carolina Central Christian College, and October 17 vs. Clayton State), BTN's best estimate for Homecoming 2026 is the October 17 home date vs. Clayton State — a typical homecoming slot for the Dragons' schedule pattern. Confirm the exact date directly with VUL Athletics (434-528-5276) before booking travel.

What to Wear

Tailgate attire runs casual and school-spirited — navy and light blue, Dragons gear, comfortable shoes for standing on the lawn. Coronation and any evening receptions call for a step up: dressy casual to semi-formal.
