There is a particular feeling that settles over North Lombardy Street every October, when Virginia Union alumni pour back into Richmond from Atlanta, D.C., New York, Charlotte, and every place in between. The band is warming up on the quad. Somebody's frat brothers from twenty years ago are already three stories deep in a cookout. And Hovey Field is filling up with people wearing maroon and steel gray like it's a uniform of belonging.
That is Virginia Union University Homecoming — one of the most meaningful homecomings on the CIAA circuit, hosted by a university built on ground that once held enslaved people captive and turned it, deliberately and defiantly, into a place of Black higher learning. For one week every fall, Richmond, Virginia belongs to the Panthers.

What Makes Virginia Union Homecoming Unlike Any Other
Every HBCU homecoming has a pulse. VUU's has depth — and three things set it apart.
First, Virginia Union University itself. Founded in 1865 — the same year the Civil War ended — VUU is one of the oldest historically Black colleges in the nation. It was built, in part, on the site of Lumpkin's Jail, a notorious Richmond slave-trading jail once known as "the Devil's Half Acre." That the university now educating generations of Black doctors, ministers, mayors, and athletes sits on that exact ground is not a footnote — it is the entire point.
Second, Richmond, Virginia. Once the second-largest slave-trading hub in the United States, Richmond is also home to Jackson Ward, historically known as the "Black Wall Street of the South," and to Maggie L. Walker, the first woman of any race to charter a bank in America. Homecoming week in Richmond means walking through Black history at nearly every turn.

The History: Virginia Union University & Its Homecoming Tradition
Virginia Union University was founded in 1865 by the American Baptist Home Mission Society, established to educate the formerly enslaved at the very moment freedom became legally possible. Its original campus incorporated the site of Lumpkin's Jail in Shockoe Bottom, a place where enslaved men, women, and children had been bought, sold, and held in bondage. Turning that ground into a university was an act of reclamation that still defines the institution's identity 160 years later.
VUU moved to its present Lombardy Street campus in the 1890s, where its Gothic Revival architecture — particularly the landmark Belgian Building — still anchors the skyline of North Richmond. The university became a cornerstone of Black religious, civic, and political leadership in Virginia, producing generations of ministers, educators, and public servants.
Athletically, VUU competes in the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) as the Panthers, and homecoming has grown alongside that athletic tradition into the biggest single week on the university's calendar — a weeklong reunion of alumni chapters, Greek organizations, gospel choirs, and generations of Panthers coming home to Lombardy Street.

VUU Homecoming matters because it is a homecoming to ground that literally transformed from a site of Black bondage into a site of Black education. Every step show, every band performance, every reunion hug on that quad happens on soil where the opposite of freedom was once enforced. It also matters because VUU has quietly and consistently produced leaders who changed the country — most notably L. Douglas Wilder, a VUU graduate who became the first elected African American governor in United States history. Homecoming is a living reminder of what a small Baptist-founded college on a former slave jail has made possible.
