There is a moment every Buccaneer describes the same way. You step off the ferry — or off a short island-hop flight — and the trade winds hit you first, then the steel pan or soca bassline drifting up from the Yard, then the sight of hundreds of alumni in blue and gold, hugging necks they haven't hugged in years, right there on a hillside campus overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Somewhere behind you, Charlotte Amalie's harbor is full of cruise ships and sailboats. Somewhere ahead of you, a step show is about to start. And you realize this homecoming is doing something no other HBCU homecoming in America can do: it is happening on two islands at once.
That is University of the Virgin Islands Homecoming — the only HBCU homecoming in the United States that unfolds entirely in the Caribbean, split across UVI's twin campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix. Based on UVI's established homecoming pattern (the 2025 celebration ran October 30 – November 2), Homecoming 2026 is expected the week of October 29 – November 1, 2026 — exact dates to be confirmed by UVI's Office of Alumni Affairs closer to the date. Either way, for four days, the U.S. Virgin Islands belong to the Buccaneers.

What Makes UVI Homecoming Unlike Any Other HBCU Homecoming
Every HBCU has a homecoming. Only one happens on U.S. soil in the middle of the Caribbean Sea — and three things make it a completely different experience from anything on the mainland.
First, it's a real HBCU, on a real island. The University of the Virgin Islands is an officially designated Historically Black College and University — a public, land-grant, sea-grant institution where the vast majority of students are Black and Afro-Caribbean. It just happens to sit on 388 acres above Brewers Bay instead of a city block. You get the Divine 9 step shows, the Greek yard shows, the alumni pride and the HBCU family energy — with a beach fifty yards away.
Second, it spans two islands. UVI Homecoming isn't contained to one campus. The celebration typically opens with a parade, beach bash, and games on the Orville E. Kean Campus in St. Thomas, then continues with a basketball battle, a sunrise breakfast sail, and "Homecoming on the Yard" on the Albert A. Sheen Campus in St. Croix — meaning alumni and visitors island-hop by ferry or short flight mid-celebration. No other homecoming in the country asks you to pack a swimsuit and a boarding pass in the same weekend.
Third, the destination does the rest of the work. This is the U.S. Virgin Islands — turquoise water, historic Danish colonial architecture, world-class beaches, and a Black Caribbean culture with its own Emancipation history that predates the U.S. Civil War. You're not just going to a homecoming. You're going on a Caribbean vacation that happens to have a step show in it.
The History: UVI & Its Homecoming
The University of the Virgin Islands was founded on March 16, 1962, as the College of the Virgin Islands — a small territorial college created to give residents of St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John access to higher education without having to leave the islands. In 1986, the institution was renamed the University of the Virgin Islands and formally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as one of the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities, cementing its place among America's HBCUs — the only one located outside the continental United States.
UVI grew into a two-campus institution: the Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas, and the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix, with an additional center on St. John. Its athletic teams, the Buccaneers and Lady Buccaneers ("the Bucks"), compete in blue, white, and gold and now play in the NAIA's HBCU Athletic Conference alongside mainland HBCUs — giving UVI's homecoming the same conference-rivalry energy you'd find at any Division I HBCU, just with a saltwater backdrop. UVI alumni have gone on to lead governments across the Caribbean, including two heads of state: Prime Minister Ricky Skerritt of Saint Kitts and Nevis (UVI's first Rhodes Scholar) and Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs of Sint Maarten.
Homecoming at UVI grew out of that same territory-wide identity — a chance for a small, tight-knit HBCU community spread across three islands to reunite once a year, welcome back alumni now scattered across the mainland and the wider Caribbean, and throw open the Yard to the whole Virgin Islands community.
Why UVI Homecoming Matters
UVI Homecoming matters because it proves something the mainland HBCU world doesn't always get to see: that Black higher education, Black excellence, and Black joy exist — and thrive — in the Caribbean too. UVI has spent over sixty years training the doctors, engineers, teachers, and heads of state of the Virgin Islands and the wider Eastern Caribbean, often against long odds of small enrollment and limited resources. Homecoming is the week the whole territory shows up to say it was worth it.
For visiting alumni of other HBCUs and Black travelers who've never set foot on the campus, UVI Homecoming is a rare on-ramp into Afro-Caribbean culture through a distinctly HBCU lens — Greek life, step shows, and gospel next to soca, quelbe, and moko jumbies. It's a reminder that the Black diaspora's story doesn't stop at the U.S. coastline.

You don't need a UVI degree to fall in love with this weekend. The Kick-Off Parade & Beach Bash at Brewer's Bay, the Alumni Marketplace, the Wet Fetes, and "Homecoming on the Yard" in St. Croix are open, affordable, and built for visitors as much as alumni. Most events run $5–$20; several are free.

What to Expect: Day by Day
- Thursday — Kick-Off Parade & Beach Bash (St. Thomas): The celebration traditionally opens with a free parade from the Herman E. Moore Golf Course to Brewer's Bay Beach, right on UVI's Kean Campus, followed by an open campus science center tour and a women's basketball game that evening.
- Friday — Homecoming Games & Alumni Marketplace (St. Thomas): A Halloween-season Trunk or Treat for families in the late afternoon gives way to evening Homecoming Games and an Alumni Marketplace showcasing island vendors, then a late-night "Wet Fete" — an outdoor soca and dancehall pool party that's become one of the weekend's signature events.
- Island Hop — St. Thomas to St. Croix: Alumni and visitors move between campuses via the inter-island ferry (about 90 minutes) or a short Cape Air flight (about 20 minutes) to catch the St. Croix half of homecoming.
- Saturday — Basketball Battle & Wet Fete (St. Croix): A free Buccaneers basketball showcase at the Sheen Campus is followed by the St. Croix edition of the Wet Fete that night — bigger sound system, bigger crowd.
- Sunday — Soca Sail & Homecoming on the Yard (St. Croix): A sunrise Soca & Sunrise breakfast sail along the St. Croix coastline (limited tickets, book early) leads into the week's marquee free event: Homecoming on the Yard, a family festival with food vendors, live music, and Greek organization showcases that closes out the weekend.

UVI's alumni network punches well above its size — it has produced two sitting Caribbean heads of government (the Prime Ministers of Saint Kitts and Nevis and of Sint Maarten), legislators across the Eastern Caribbean, and a deep bench of doctors, engineers, and educators throughout the USVI and the wider region. Homecoming week is when that network comes home.

UVI Homecoming's social calendar runs on island time but hits hard. The Ultimate Halloween Wet Fete on St. Thomas and its St. Croix edition the following night are the anchor parties of the weekend — outdoor, soca-and-dancehall-driven pool parties that draw alumni, current students, and locals alike. The Alumni Marketplace doubles as a daytime social scene, and informal beach gatherings at Brewer's Bay and around Charlotte Amalie fill the gaps between official events. Black History & Cultural Sites in the U.S. Virgin Islands
- Fort Frederik, Frederiksted, St. Croix — Ground zero for Caribbean emancipation. On July 3, 1848, enslaved Virgin Islanders led by Moses "General Buddhoe" Gottlieb marched on Frederiksted, forcing Danish Governor Peter von Scholten to proclaim "all unfree in the Danish West Indies are from today emancipated" — fifteen years before the Emancipation Proclamation on the U.S. mainland. Frederiksted is still known as "Freedom City."
- Emancipation Garden, Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas — A public park in the heart of downtown marking that same 1848 liberation, anchored by a statue of a freed man blowing a conch shell and a replica Liberty Bell.
