Spelman College was founded on April 11, 1881, when two white missionary teachers from New England, Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles, opened a school for Black women and girls in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta. Their first class was eleven formerly enslaved women, many of whom could not read, meeting to learn in a church basement just sixteen years after the end of the Civil War. It was a radical act: at a time when the American South offered almost nothing in the way of formal education to Black women, Packard and Giles built an institution around the belief that Black women deserved the same rigorous education as anyone else.

The school was renamed Spelman Seminary in 1884 in honor of Laura Spelman Rockefeller and her family, whose early financial support — along with that of John D. Rockefeller — helped the fledgling institution acquire its permanent campus. It became Spelman College in 1924.
