You pull onto Rust Avenue in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and the campus your great-grandparents might have walked opens up in front of you — 126 acres of history, live oaks, and red brick buildings that have stood since Reconstruction. And for one weekend every fall, this small campus in a small Mississippi town becomes the center of the world for everyone who ever called themselves a Bearcat.
That is Rust College Homecoming. It is smaller than the mega-homecomings of the big-name HBCUs, and that is exactly the point. What Makes Rust College Homecoming Different
Rust Homecoming isn't chasing the scale of the bigger schools — it leans into three things that make it its own kind of special.
First, Rust College itself. Founded in 1866, Rust is one of only ten HBCUs founded before 1868 still operating today, and it is the oldest HBCU in Mississippi. When Bearcats come home, they come home to one of the actual birthplaces of Black higher education in America.
Second, Holly Springs. This small Marshall County town of historic antebellum homes and red-clay roads is also the birthplace of Ida B. Wells — the pioneering journalist, anti-lynching crusader, and NAACP co-founder whose father, James Wells, helped build Rust's very first campus building in 1867. History isn't a plaque here; it's the ground you're standing on.

The History: Rust College and Holly Springs
Rust College was founded on November 24, 1866 — just months after the end of the Civil War — by the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, opening inside Asbury United Methodist Church under the leadership of Rev. Samuel Moses. Northern missionaries and local Black builders, including James Wells (father of Ida B. Wells), raised the college's first permanent building in 1867. Chartered originally as Shaw University in 1870, the school was renamed Rust University in 1892 to avoid confusion with North Carolina's Shaw University, then became Rust College in 1915.
It is the oldest of eleven HBCUs affiliated with the United Methodist Church and the second-oldest private college in Mississippi. Over more than 150 years, Rust has produced over 20,000 graduates — bishops, educators, journalists, lawyers, physicians, and civic leaders — out of a campus town that is itself a landmark of Black American history.

Rust Homecoming matters because it is a direct line back to the earliest chapter of Black higher education — built by formerly enslaved people and missionaries just a year removed from emancipation, in a town where a young Ida B. Wells grew into the woman who would risk her life to document lynching in the American South.
