Little Rock has more than one HBCU homecoming worth the trip — but Philander Smith's stands apart for three reasons.

Philander Smith University was founded in 1877 as Walden Seminary, established by the Methodist Episcopal Church to educate formerly enslaved people west of the Mississippi River at a time when almost no other doors were open to them. In 1882, the school was renamed in honor of Philander Smith following a substantial gift from his widow, Adeline Smith, and the name has carried through nearly 150 years of history on the same historic block of central Little Rock.
The campus itself sits on land now recognized as a National Register Historic District. Generations of Panthers have passed through it — including students who put their bodies on the line during the civil rights movement, and generations of Little Rock's Black professional and civic leadership. In August 2023, the institution became Philander Smith University after launching its first graduate program, a milestone that marked a new chapter for a campus that has never stopped reinventing itself while holding onto its founding mission.
