There is a particular kind of energy that settles over Fayetteville Street in Durham every October. Maroon and gray start appearing on porches and in storefront windows. Alumni chapters from Charlotte to Chicago start booking flights. And on campus, the marching band begins rehearsing the songs that will carry thousands of Eagles back onto a campus they call home, no matter how many years or how many miles separate them from it.
That is North Carolina Central University Homecoming — officially branded The Ultimate Homecoming Experience — one of the proudest traditions in North Carolina's rich HBCU landscape. For nine days every fall, Durham becomes an extension of NCCU's campus, and for one Saturday in particular, Eagle Pride takes over the entire city.
Mark it down: The Ultimate Homecoming Experience returns October 2–10, 2026, with the football game against William & Mary kicking off Saturday, October 10 at 1:00 p.m.

North Carolina has no shortage of HBCU homecomings, but NCCU's Ultimate Homecoming Experience carves out its own lane — and three things set it apart.
First, North Carolina Central University's history. NCCU was founded in 1910 and holds a distinction few schools in the country can claim: it became the nation's first state-supported liberal arts institution for Black students. That legacy of being "first" runs through everything the university does, and homecoming week is where the campus proudly reminds itself — and everyone visiting — of exactly what it took to build that legacy.
Second, Durham itself. NCCU sits inside one of the most storied Black cities in the South, a city whose Black business district was once so prosperous it earned its own "Black Wall Street" nickname. When Eagles come home, they come home to a city that understands what Black excellence, Black entrepreneurship, and Black community actually look like — because Durham helped write that story.
Third, the culture of the Ultimate Homecoming Experience itself. This is not a single football Saturday. It is a nine-day run of coronation, step shows, concerts, campus traditions like the "10:40 Break," a parade down Fayetteville Street, and a tailgate scene that turns campus into one giant maroon-and-gray family reunion.
North Carolina Central University was founded in 1910 by Dr. James E. Shepard as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race, a school built to give Black North Carolinians access to higher education at a time when almost every door in the state was closed to them. By 1925, the institution had been reorganized as North Carolina College for Negroes, becoming the first state-supported liberal arts college for Black students anywhere in the country — a milestone that still anchors the university's identity a century later.
NCCU joined the University of North Carolina system in 1972 and has since grown into a comprehensive university with nationally respected programs in law, business, and the sciences, all while never losing the sense of purpose Dr. Shepard built the institution on. Homecoming grew up alongside that legacy — a week where the university's Eagles, from the earliest graduating classes to the newest, return to Durham to celebrate not just a football season, but everything the institution represents.
The Eagles compete in the MEAC as an athletic powerhouse in Durham, and the mascot, Eddie the Eagle, along with the school's maroon and gray colors, have flown over campus since long before "homecoming" carried the branding it does today. What was once a simple football weekend has evolved into The Ultimate Homecoming Experience — a full nine days of coronation, concerts, a parade, and a tailgate that pulls in alumni, current students, and visitors from across the region.
NCCU Homecoming matters because it is a living celebration of what it means to build something from nothing. In 1910, there was no guarantee that a school founded to educate Black North Carolinians would survive, let alone become a nationally recognized university with law and business schools that rank among the best in the country. Every homecoming is a reminder that it did — and that it thrived.
For alumni, coming back to Durham is an act of gratitude and reconnection — with classmates, with professors who shaped their careers, and with the version of themselves that walked onto this campus for the first time. For visitors who never set foot on NCCU's campus as students, homecoming week is an open invitation into that same spirit: a chance to feel what an HBCU community built on nearly 120 years of resilience actually feels like from the inside.
You do not need a maroon-and-gray degree to enjoy NCCU Homecoming — and if you have never experienced it, 2026 is the year to change that. The Ultimate Homecoming Experience is built for everyone: the step show, the concert, the coronation, the parade down Fayetteville Street, and the tailgate outside O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium are all open to the public, and Durham itself gives you a full weekend of things to do beyond campus.
The fashion is part of the draw too. Homecoming week in Durham means tailored fits at the tailgate, Greek line looks at the step show, and Sunday-best energy at the coronation. Come ready to be seen, and come ready to be moved by a campus that has spent over a century proving what's possible.
You will leave with new friends, new favorite Durham restaurants, and a renewed sense of pride. Guaranteed.

NCCU Homecoming is a legitimate professional networking event, not just a party weekend. The university's law school, business school, and long list of alumni in government, education, and healthcare all reconnect during homecoming week, and Durham's own thriving Black professional and entrepreneurial scene amplifies it.
Durham goes all in for NCCU Homecoming week. Downtown venues, campus-adjacent bars, and event spaces fill up with homecoming-branded parties every night, and the official Ultimate Homecoming Experience events — coronation, step show, and concert — should be secured as early as tickets go on sale.
Beyond the official calendar, promoters from Durham, Raleigh, Charlotte, and Atlanta bring pop-up parties and day parties to the city all week. The Saturday night after the football game is the peak of the social calendar, with celebrations running late across downtown Durham and the areas surrounding campus.
Durham hotels fill up fast during NCCU Homecoming week. Book early, especially for the Saturday of the football game.
