First, North Carolina Central University's history. The History: North Carolina Central University & Its Homecoming Tradition

North Carolina Central University was founded in 1910 by Dr. James E. Shepard as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race, a school built to give Black North Carolinians access to higher education at a time when almost every door in the state was closed to them.
