One of the great HBCU homecomings on the East Coast, set against the backdrop of a historic port city with a Black cultural legacy that runs as deep as the Elizabeth River. What Makes Norfolk State Homecoming Unlike Any Other
Every HBCU has a homecoming. But NSU's carries its own distinct energy — and three things set it apart.
First, Norfolk State University itself. Founded in 1935 as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University, NSU grew from a satellite campus of 85 students into a fully independent, nationally respected HBCU that has produced comedians, professional athletes, scientists, and civic leaders. It is a school built on resilience — a school that had to fight for its own name, its own accreditation, and its own identity, and did.
Second, Norfolk itself. This is one of the oldest and most historically significant Black communities on the East Coast — a port city where free and enslaved Black Virginians built churches, businesses, and cultural institutions against extraordinary odds. That history is still walkable today, just minutes from campus.
Third, Spartan spirit. NSU homecoming regularly draws crowds well north of 40,000 to William “Dick” Price Stadium — the 2025 homecoming reportedly drew a record 47,273 fans. The tailgate lot, the Spartan Legion marching band, and the green-and-gold fashion on display make it one of the most photographed HBCU homecomings in Virginia.
The History: Norfolk State University & Its Homecoming Tradition
Norfolk State University was founded on September 18, 1935, as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University, created to provide higher education access to Black Virginians in the Hampton Roads region at a time when options were scarce. The school began with just 85 students holding classes in a borrowed building.
The institution changed names and missions several times as it grew — becoming Norfolk Polytechnic College in 1942, gaining independence from Virginia Union in 1956, becoming Norfolk State College in 1969, and finally achieving full university status as Norfolk State University in 1979. The permanent campus on Corprew Avenue, anchored by Brown Hall (opened in 1955), has been the heart of Spartan life for seven decades.
Athletics took the Spartan name and the green-and-gold colors in 1952, and homecoming grew alongside the university’s rise into a full NCAA Division I program competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Today, NSU Homecoming is one of the marquee events on the HBCU calendar in Virginia — a week that reconnects alumni to a school that has always had to prove itself, and always has.
