The Oldest Civil Rights Organization in America Comes Home to Chicago
For 117 years, the NAACP National Convention has been the most important annual gathering of Black political power, civil rights leadership, and grassroots organizing in the United States. In 2026, it comes to Chicago — a city with a century-long relationship with the NAACP and one of the deepest Black political traditions in the country. This is not a spectator event. It is the working floor of American civil rights, where the movement sets its agenda for the year ahead.
From July 15–20, 2026, tens of thousands of delegates, activists, elected officials, students, faith leaders, and everyday members will fill McCormick Place for six days of strategy, celebration, and shared purpose. For Black travelers, it is one of the most meaningful trips you can take all year — part family reunion, part general assembly, part cultural homecoming.
Why the NAACP Convention Matters
The convention is where the NAACP debates and votes on the resolutions that shape its national policy priorities — voting rights, economic justice, education, criminal justice reform, and health equity. Delegates from branches across the country carry their communities' concerns onto the national stage. National leaders, members of Congress, mayors, and presidential-level figures come to speak because this is where a critical mass of organized Black America gathers in one room.

What to Expect on the Floor
General Sessions & Keynotes — Headline addresses from the nation's most prominent civil rights leaders, elected officials, and cultural voices.
ACT-SO — The Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, often called the "Olympics of the Mind," showcases the brilliance of Black high school students competing across the sciences, humanities, and performing and visual arts. Watching these young people compete is one of the most inspiring experiences of the entire week.
Workshops & Town Halls — Practical, movement-building sessions on organizing, policy, entrepreneurship, and leadership.
The Career & Business Expo — A major career fair and exhibit hall connecting attendees with employers, HBCUs, Black-owned businesses, and national organizations.
The Freedom Fund Gala & Worship Service — The signature celebration and the spiritual heart of the convention that close the week.

Few cities carry as much Black political and cultural weight as Chicago — the city of Ida B. Wells, Harold Washington, the Chicago Defender, and Bronzeville, the historic capital of Black Chicago. Between sessions, build in time for the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, the Bronzeville Walk of Fame, a South Side food crawl, and the lakefront. McCormick Place sits just south of downtown on the lake, walkable to the museum campus and a short ride to the Loop.
