There's a particular kind of homecoming that doesn't involve a marching band, a mascot, or a tailgate lot packed with grills at 8 a.m. It happens in a hotel ballroom, a rooftop lounge, and a conference center on a quiet campus in southwest Atlanta — and it is every bit as emotional as the ones with stadiums attached.
This is MSM Alumni Reunion Weekend, the annual homecoming of the Morehouse School of Medicine National Alumni Association (MSMNAA). There's no football game and no step show here — instead, there are physicians who haven't seen each other since match day, researchers who trained together during residency, and public health leaders who built their careers on what they learned in Atlanta, all coming back to reconnect, celebrate, and reinvest in the students coming up behind them.
Why MSM's Reunion Doesn't Look Like a Typical HBCU Homecoming — And Why That's the Point
Morehouse School of Medicine is not Morehouse College. It's easy to conflate the two — they share a name, a founding relationship, and a campus corner in Atlanta's historic Atlanta University Center — but MSM has been its own free-standing graduate medical institution since 1981, when it split off from Morehouse College to become an independent school awarding the M.D. degree. There is no undergraduate student body, no football team, no marching band, and no mascot. What MSM has instead is a growing national network of Black physicians, PhD researchers, and public health leaders who trained in one of the most mission-driven medical schools in the country — and a reunion built around what that network actually needs: connection, mentorship, and recognition.
That's why MSM Alumni Reunion Weekend looks the way it does — a General Body Meeting, a New Grad Mixer, a happy hour, and a black-tie dinner honoring alumni excellence — rather than a tailgate and a homecoming court. It's a professional and social homecoming built for a graduate medical community, not an undergraduate campus.
The History: From a Feasibility Study to a Freestanding Medical School
Morehouse School of Medicine traces its roots to 1970, when a group of Atlanta community doctors approached Morehouse College leadership about the desperate need for more Black physicians to address healthcare disparities in underserved communities. A feasibility committee, led by Dr. Joseph N. Gayles Jr., studied the idea, and MSM enrolled its first students in a two-year basic sciences program in 1978. In 1981, the school became independent from Morehouse College, and by 1985 it had achieved full accreditation to award the M.D. degree in its own right.
Today, under the leadership of Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice — MSM's sixth president and the first woman to lead the institution, in the role since 2014 — Morehouse School of Medicine has become one of the nation's top producers of Black physicians and primary care doctors serving underserved communities, with a mission explicitly built around health equity.
Why This Reunion Matters
Every HBCU homecoming is, at its core, an act of returning to give back to the place that shaped you. For MSM alumni, that return has an unusually direct impact: donations made during Reunion Weekend fund scholarships that keep the pipeline of Black physicians and biomedical researchers open, and the mentorship exchanged in a hotel lobby or over dinner can shape a resident's entire career path. In a country that still faces a critical shortage of Black doctors, an event that brings this specific alumni network back together, in person, once a year, is doing quiet but significant work.

What to Expect: The Weekend Flow
- MSMNAA General Body Meeting (Virtual): A 7:00 p.m. Zoom session where the National Alumni Association updates members on the organization's work, scholarship funding, and advocacy before the in-person weekend begins.
- New Grad Mixer: Held at The Painted Duck in Atlanta, this casual evening (6:00–8:00 p.m.) welcomes the newest MSM graduates into the alumni fold.
- Alumni Happy Hour: A relaxed networking gathering at Boxcar West End (6:00–8:30 p.m.), where classes mix across graduation years over drinks and conversation.
- Dinner & Alumni Excellence Awards: The formal centerpiece of the weekend, held at the Calvin Smyre Education Conference Center on MSM's campus, where the MSMNAA honors outstanding alumni and recognizes class gift totals.
Note: MSM Alumni Reunion Week 2026 was held May 11–16, 2026. The dates above for 2027 are BTN's estimate based on that pattern and should be confirmed directly with MSMNAA (alumni@msm.edu) closer to the date, as the association had not yet published official 2027 dates at the time of writing.
What to Wear
This is a physician crowd, and it shows. The New Grad Mixer and Happy Hour run business casual to smart casual — think tailored, not stuffy. The Excellence Awards Dinner is cocktail attire to black tie optional; Atlanta's medical alumni scene does not do "underdressed."

- Paschal's — Once the unofficial headquarters of the Civil Rights Movement, where Dr. King, John Lewis, and Andrew Young strategized over fried chicken. Now located in Castleberry Hill, it remains one of the most historically significant restaurants in Black America.
- Mary Mac's Tea Room — A Midtown Atlanta institution since 1945 and one of the city's first integrated restaurants in 1962. Classic Southern comfort food in a room that has hosted everyone from John Lewis to Jimmy Carter.
- The Painted Duck — The New Grad Mixer venue itself, a lively duckpin bowling and cocktail lounge popular with Atlanta's young professional crowd.
- Boxcar West End — A sceney bar and lounge near the Atlanta University Center, the site of the Alumni Happy Hour and a favorite gathering spot in the historically Black West End neighborhood.

- The King Center & Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park — The heart of Sweet Auburn, home to Dr. King's birthplace, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and his final resting place. An essential visit for any trip to Black Atlanta.
- Sweet Auburn Historic District — Once called "the richest Negro street in the world," this 19-acre National Historic Landmark district along Auburn Avenue was the commercial and cultural center of Black Atlanta, home to Atlanta Life Insurance Company and the Atlanta Daily World.
- APEX Museum — Located in the heart of Sweet Auburn, the African American Panoramic Experience Museum, founded in 1985, tells the story of African American history and culture through the lens of Auburn Avenue.
- The Atlanta University Center — Walk the historic campuses of Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University, all steps from MSM and among the most important clusters of HBCU history in America.
