You are standing on the yard in front of Holmes Hall, the brass of the Magnificent Marching Machine rattling your chest, thousands of Bears in blue and orange pouring back onto a campus the National Trust for Historic Preservation has literally declared a National Treasure. Somebody you haven't seen since a 7:45 a.m. class at the Earl G. Graves School of Business finds you in the crowd. The step show hasn't even started yet and your voice is already gone.

That is Morgan State Homecoming. Baltimore's biggest HBCU weekend of the year. And for a full week every October — October 5–11, 2026, built around a marquee showdown with Robert Morris on Saturday, October 10 — the city of Baltimore belongs to the Bears.

What Makes Morgan State Homecoming Unlike Any Other
Every HBCU has a homecoming. Morgan State's stands out for three reasons.
First, Morgan State University itself. Founded in 1867, Morgan is the third-largest HBCU in the nation, a Carnegie-classified R2 "Doctoral University with High Research Activity," and the only college campus in America designated a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This is a school that just received a historic $63 million gift from MacKenzie Scott and leads every HBCU in the country in Fulbright Scholars produced. When Bears come home for homecoming, they come home to an institution on the rise.
Second, Baltimore. Charm City is a majority-Black city with a Black history that runs as deep as any in America — Frederick Douglass learned to read here, Billie Holiday grew up here, Thurgood Marshall practiced law here. Third, the tradition. This isn't just a football game. The History: Morgan State University & Its Homecoming Tradition
Morgan State University was founded in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute, established by the Methodist Episcopal Church to train young Black men for ministry in the years immediately following the Civil War. In 1890, the school was renamed Morgan College in honor of Reverend Lyttleton Morgan, the school's first board chairman, who donated land to secure its future. In 1939, the State of Maryland purchased the college, making it a public institution — Morgan State College — and in 1975 it officially became Morgan State University after adding doctoral programs.
Over more than 150 years, Morgan has grown into one of the most significant HBCUs in the country — today the third-largest by enrollment, with over 11,500 students, a Carnegie R2 research classification, and alumni who have shaped the NFL, the halls of Congress, city halls, newsrooms, and Hollywood. Morgan State Homecoming grew alongside that rise, evolving from a campus football tradition into a week-long celebration that draws alumni and visitors from across the country back to Baltimore every October.

Morgan State Homecoming matters because Morgan State matters — and that is not an exaggeration. This is a university built by formerly enslaved people's descendants just two years after emancipation, one that has spent 150-plus years proving what Black institutions can achieve when given the resources to do it. Coming home to Baltimore is an act of reconnecting with that legacy, and with the generations of Bears who used a Morgan education to integrate professional football, argue civil rights cases, run cities, and report the news.
