There's a moment every Lincoln University of Missouri alum knows by heart. You pull into Jefferson City on a September afternoon, and before you even see campus, you see the blue and white — porch flags, car flags, Blue Tiger gear on every third person walking down Chestnut Street. You get out of the car and someone you haven't seen in fifteen years spots you first. "Blue Tiger!" they shout, and just like that, you're home.
That's Lincoln University of Missouri Homecoming — smaller and more intimate than the mega-homecomings of the SWAC and MEAC, but carrying a founding story that almost no other institution in America can match. For one unforgettable week every fall — September 20–26, 2026, with the signature parade and football game on Saturday, September 26 — Jefferson City, Missouri's own state capital, turns Blue Tiger blue for the school that emancipated Black soldiers built with their own hands and their own soldiers' pay.
What Makes Lincoln University Homecoming Unlike Any Other
Every HBCU has a homecoming. Lincoln University of Missouri's is one of the most quietly extraordinary — and three things set it apart.
First, the founding itself. Lincoln wasn't established by a wealthy philanthropist or a religious denomination. It was founded by formerly enslaved men who had just fought and won their own freedom, and who decided, before they even mustered out of the Army, that the next battle was education. That is a founding story unlike almost any other in American higher education.
Second, Jefferson City itself. This is Missouri's seat of government — the state capitol dome is visible from parts of campus. Many Lincoln alumni work in the very government buildings a few blocks from where the homecoming parade rolls through downtown every year. Few HBCU homecomings happen this close to the literal halls of state power.
Third, the scale and the warmth. Lincoln's homecoming doesn't draw 40,000 people — and that's exactly the point. It's parade-through-downtown, everybody-knows-everybody, family-reunion-energy homecoming. The History: Lincoln University's Founding by Black Civil War Veterans
This is the story that makes Lincoln University of Missouri unlike almost any other college in the country. In 1865, as the Civil War was ending, Black soldiers of the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantry regiments, stationed at Fort McIntosh, Texas, made a decision that would outlive every one of them. Earning just $13 a month, they pooled together $5,000 of their own soldiers' pay to found a school for the education of the formerly enslaved back home in Missouri. The 65th Regiment alone contributed an additional $1,400 toward the school's endowment.
On January 14, 1866, an organizing committee formally chartered the institution, built on three founding principles: education for emancipated African Americans, a home in Missouri, and the integration of study with labor. Richard Baxter Foster, a former first lieutenant of the 62nd Infantry, became the school's first principal. Lincoln Institute opened its doors on September 17, 1866, with just two students in a modest frame building in Jefferson City.
The school grew steadily — becoming a land-grant institution in 1890 and earning full university status from the Missouri Legislature in 1921. Today, the Soldiers' Memorial Plaza on campus stands as a permanent tribute to the veterans who built Lincoln University with their own money and their own hands. It is, quite simply, one of the most powerful founding stories in Black American history — and it happened right here in Jefferson City.
