Founding History & Mission

LeMoyne-Owen College traces its roots to 1862, making it one of the oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the country. Its story begins in the middle of the Civil War, when the American Missionary Association established a school in Memphis, Tennessee to educate formerly enslaved people. The school was later named LeMoyne Institute in honor of Dr. Francis Julius LeMoyne, an abolitionist physician from Pennsylvania whose donations helped keep the doors open. Over the following decades it grew from a normal and commercial school into a four-year, degree-granting institution: LeMoyne College.

A second thread of the college's history begins in 1954, when the Tennessee Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention founded Owen College, a junior college created to expand higher-education access for Black Memphians. In 1968, LeMoyne College and Owen College merged to form LeMoyne-Owen College, combining a Reconstruction-era missionary school with a mid-century Baptist junior college into the single private, four-year liberal arts institution that stands today.
