What Makes Florida Memorial Homecoming Unlike Any Other
Every HBCU has a homecoming. But FMU's carries something you won't find at the bigger, louder homecomings up north — and three things set it apart.
First, Florida Memorial University itself. Founded in 1879, FMU is the oldest HBCU in the state of Florida and the only HBCU in South Florida. That distinction matters. There is no other historically Black college or university within the Miami metro — which means FMU's homecoming isn't just a campus event, it's the one weekend a year when South Florida's entire HBCU diaspora, transplants, and alumni from every era converge in one place.

The History: Florida Memorial University & Its Homecoming Legacy
Florida Memorial University traces its founding to 1879, when it began as the Florida Baptist Institute in Live Oak, Florida — just fourteen years after the end of the Civil War. The institution relocated to Jacksonville, merged with a sister Baptist academy in 1896 to become Florida Normal and Industrial Institute, and moved to St. Augustine in 1918, where it grew into a cornerstone of Black higher education on Florida's historic coast.
In 1968, amid the civil rights era, the college relocated to a new 44-acre campus in what is now Miami Gardens — positioning it as the only HBCU serving the rapidly growing Black population of South Florida. The institution was renamed Florida Memorial University in 2006 to reflect its expanding graduate programs.
Homecoming grew alongside that journey — from a modest alumni gathering into the week-long celebration of luncheons, step shows, concerts, and football it is today. It remains, above all, a family reunion: generations of Lions returning to the only campus of its kind in South Florida.
