What Makes Bowie State Homecoming Unlike Any Other
Every HBCU throws a homecoming. Bowie State's stands apart for three reasons.
First, the history behind it. Bowie State University was founded in 1865 — making it not only the oldest historically Black university in Maryland, but one of the ten oldest HBCUs in the entire country. This is not a school that came up in the 1900s. It came up in the literal aftermath of slavery, built by formerly enslaved people and free Black Baltimoreans who understood that education was the whole game. That history is baked into every homecoming weekend.
Second, the location. Bowie sits in Prince George's County, Maryland — the wealthiest majority-Black county in the entire United States for two decades running, and historically the most populous Black-majority county in America. It's tucked perfectly between Washington D.C. The History: Bowie State University & Its Homecoming Tradition
Bowie State University's story starts in Baltimore, not Bowie. In 1864, a group of 46 Black and white civic leaders formed the Baltimore Association for the Moral and Educational Improvement of the Colored People. On January 9, 1865 — months before the Civil War officially ended — they opened School #1 inside the African Baptist Church at Calvert and Saratoga Streets. Its mission: train Black teachers to educate the newly free.
That single classroom became the Baltimore Normal School for Colored Teachers in 1867, and over the next century it evolved through several names and locations — relocating to Bowie in 1911, becoming Maryland Normal and Industrial School at Bowie in 1914, Maryland Teachers College at Bowie in 1938, Bowie State College in 1963, and finally Bowie State University in 1988. Through every name change, the mission held: educate Black Marylanders and send them out to build the state.
Today Bowie State enrolls nearly 6,000 students on a 338-acre campus and competes as the Bulldogs in NCAA Division II's CIAA — the same storied conference that has produced generations of HBCU football and basketball rivalries. Homecoming grew up alongside that athletic tradition, evolving into the week-long celebration of step shows, gospel concerts, a coronation, a parade, and the Saturday tailgate-and-football ritual that now defines the last full week of October in Bowie.
