The school became state-supported in 1917, achieved four-year college status in 1943, and was granted full university status in 1996 — more than nine decades of continuous growth rooted in the same mission Holley started with.

Albany State students were at the center of the Albany Movement, the 1961–1962 civil rights campaign that brought together local organizers, SNCC field secretaries Charles Sherrod and Cordell Reagon, and eventually Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the SCLC, to challenge segregation across an entire city at once — buses, waiting rooms, libraries, and public space itself. Albany State students walked out of class to march, filled the city's jails, and helped make Albany a proving ground for tactics that would shape the rest of the civil rights movement.
