Event Overview
Official Name: Roots Picnic 2025
City & Venue: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — The Mann Center at Fairmount Park
Dates: May 31 – June 1, 2025 (Saturday & Sunday)
Theme: A Celebration of Black Music, Culture, Community, and Innovation
The Roots Picnic is a dynamic, multi-genre festival curated by the legendary hip-hop group The Roots. Held annually in the group’s hometown of Philadelphia, the event blends live music, podcast stages, art, Black-owned business showcases, and cultural conversations — all in one immersive weekend. At its core, the festival is about community, consciousness, and creativity — a tribute to the past, present, and future of Black culture.
Whether you’re vibing to neo-soul, laughing at a live podcast taping, or building community in a wellness panel, Roots Picnic is a cultural homecoming you won’t want to miss.
History and Background
Founded: 2008
Founders: The Roots (Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter)
Born from the creative genius of Philadelphia’s own The Roots, the festival was launched in 2008 as a one-day gathering. What started as a local event for music heads has now become one of the most anticipated Black cultural festivals in the country, drawing crowds of over 30,000 each year.
Key Milestones:
- 2015: Expanded stages and added a podcast component.
- 2020: Transitioned to a virtual format due to COVID-19, showcasing artists like H.E.R., Kirk Franklin, and Michelle Obama.
- 2022–2024: Continued expansion of community panels, wellness stages, and surprise superstar guests like Lauryn Hill, Diddy, and Usher.
Legacy: A hub for discovering the next wave of talent while honoring music icons and cultural leaders.
